    Posted: 01 Dec 2008 at 12:40pm
So I was bored the other day, and decided to paint my stock wheels. Somebody gave me 3 brand new tires, so I found the forth one, had them put them on the wheels and then cleaned them up and painted them black. I used automotive paint. I put alot of work into them and I am really suprised how great they look. I wonder how long they will stay that way if I put them on the truck. I will get some pics of them on here later. This may be an idea for anybody thinking about new wheels.

Thanks, I went ahead and put them on the truck during the winter, since that salt goo they put on the roads can wreak havok on wheels, and it helps keep tread on my expensive BFG's. I will try to get a picture of them on the truck. I think I will swap between winter/summer wheels. I dont think they look as good as the procomp wheels, but for the money, they are close enough to consider if you lack the funds.

I want black wheels  on my truck (one of my biggest non-performance desires), but don't want to shell out the money for aftermarket wheels when the stock wheels are so nice.  That paint looks great!

What paint did you use and how has it been holding up?
Did you use a clear coat over the top?
What did you do for prep?
I want my bowtie in the middle to be blue, can you help me make that happen?

Guess I had a few questions for you!Ouch

Great job on those!Clap

I washed them with alcohol and brillo pad to get the road debris off. I was amazed how bad the salt chems from the road had eaten away inside the wheel, that took the longest. I put on engine primer first, and then the flat black engine paint. All from Napa. I went with the better name brand. I didnt put on the clear because I wanted the finish to be matte, thats what my procomps are (summer wheels). It would most likely be easiest to paint the bowties blue with a small paint brush. If yours is like mine, there are ridges around the emblem and its difficult to get a good tape line. I put them under a infered heater in my shop for a couple of days so that it cured really well. Tons of light coats, making sure to get all of the angles so that you dont have to go back later and touch it up.  I drive tons of dirt roads, and the other day I noticed a few nicks in them. As nice as they look, I cant wait for summer to be here. I want my "truck tires" back on.

I'm going to be checking them out closely on the 28th.  My problem is I don't have the ability to go without the vehicle for more than a long day (maybe rwo day weekend.  The other problem is all the dog hair and dirt in the garage, so I don't have a real clean place to paint.  I am fighting with that with my bowtie as well

The best option I see is for you to paint mine for me while I am in St. Lucia in early March.Tongue

Actually it would be something I would want to do.  The infrared heater thing is not possible for me either.

That would be helpful, but another dude with a spray can would be pretty awesome too!

Plenty of beer and food would be providedWink (Corona and some sort of elk based mexican food work?)

Still can't get over how great those wheels look!  Did you get black Lug Nuts for your wheels too?
